The range-topping Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 will sit above the recently-released CLA 35 with up to 416bhp

The upcoming Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 has been leaked on the firm’s German configurator site ahead of its release. It will act as the CLA’s flagship model when it reaches the UK market in the summer, sitting above the recently-released CLA 35, with a more aggressive body kit, a revised drivetrain and more power.

From what we can see from this single, rear-facing image, the new CLA 45 will sport a more aggressive rear diffuser, deeper side skirts and larger exhaust tips than its lesser-powered sibling. The CLA 35’s boot-mounted lip spoiler will persist across the range, while a reworked front bumper and a larger splitter are expected up front.

Mercedes’s new AMG CLA 45 will likely be powered by the same turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine as the new AMG A 45. It’ll come in two states of tune, with the entry-level model producing 382bhp, and the range-topping “S” variant producing 416bhp. Torque figures are yet to be confirmed, but we expect figures in excess of 475Nm.

Tobias Moers, boss of Mercedes-AMG, recently confirmed the company’s planned drivetrain sharing across the A-Class family. He said: It’s not just one car, either; it’s four, with the A 45, CLA 45, CLA 45 Shooting Brake and GLA 45. This gives us the freedom to move forward into the future, with the next generation.”

Mercedes’s new CLA 45 is also touted to receive a redesigned four-wheel-drive system with a rear-wheel-drive biasing “drift mode” setting, similar to the torque vectoring differentials fitted to the old Ford Focus RS. The drivetrain setting will likely be available for both the standard model and the AMG CLA 45 S.
