First scarce details on stunning new front-engined Ferrari Roma coupe revealed

Ferrari has taken the wraps off a totally new model called Roma, which is the firm’s fifth new car to be revealed this year. It slots into the line-up as a new V8 powered, fixed roof Berlinetta – a front-engined coupe sitting below the mid-engined F8 Tributo in the firm’s line-up, but above the drop-top Portofino.

Described as a “mid-front-engined 2+ coupe”, implying the option of two rear seats, it looks quite unlike anything else in the Ferrari line-up and features styling inspired by 50s and 60s Italian car design.

The overall shape emphasises a long bonnet, a low nose, a new look grille, new headlights with ultra-thin daytime running LEDs and a set back cabin with strong rear shoulders over the rear axle.

Power is provided by a turbocharged 3.9-litre V8 developing 612bhp and peak torque of 760Nm between 3,000 and 5,750rpm, while the redline is capped at 7,500rpm. Drive is sent to the rear axle by the same eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox used in the new plug-in hybrid SF90 Stradale supercar, recently introduced as a new range topper for the marque.

Ferrari is keeping much about the Roma a secret for now, but has issued a look in the cabin. It features a wholly new interior architecture, with a dashboard defined by a portrait central infotainment screen that flows directly into the gear selector panel, beyond which the centre console continues down into the floor of the car.

The steering wheel is taken from the SF90, as is the fully digitalised instrument panel, while as ever a secondary display is placed opposite the front passenger.

The fuss around family cars may have centred firmly on the all-new Volkswagen Golf of late, but that’s not say other manufacturers are resting on their laurels. Conscious of quite how capable Wolfsburg’s hottest hatchback may be, makers are rushing to make improvements to their fast-selling favourites. Honda is no exception – the brand quietly updated the Civic with a smattering of stylistic and ergonomic tweaks only last month. Not content, it has now added a racier Sport Line model to the range, designed to steal sales from popular rivals like the Ford Focus ST-Line and SEAT Leon FR. • Best hatchbacks to buy now Instead of acting as a standalone spec, Honda’s sporty styling tweaks are applied to the flagship Civic EX, and will later be added to the to cheaper SR cars, too.
